Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions About Our Programs

Have questions about starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or Muay Thai at Thiago Alves Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? Here are the answers to what new students and parents ask us most. Reach out anytime if yours is not covered.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling martial art built on leverage, position, and technique rather than size or strength. Students learn to control an opponent on the ground and finish with joint locks or chokes. It is one of the most effective forms of self-defense, and it makes a challenging, full-body workout.

Yes. New students can take a free trial class in any of our programs, so you or your child can meet the coaches and feel what training is like before signing up. Fill out the form on this page and we will help you pick the right class. Our Saturday open mat is for current members, so trials are booked into a regular class.

Children can start at age 4. Our Juniors program is built for ages 4 to 7 and focuses on coordination, listening, and basic movements through structured games. Our Kids program for ages 8 to 15 teaches real technique and self-defense, and students 16 and older join the adult classes.

No. Most of our students walked in with no martial arts background at all. Classes start with the fundamentals and our coaches pair beginners with patient training partners. Your fitness improves by training, so there is no need to get in shape first.

Gi Jiu-Jitsu is trained in the traditional kimono, and the grips on the collar and sleeves make it a slower, more technical game. No-gi is trained in shorts and a rash guard, so it moves faster and relies more on body control. Our adult program runs both every week, and training both makes you a more complete grappler.

Yes. Our adult Muay Thai program, for ages 16 and up, teaches striking with punches, kicks, elbows, and knees. Many students train both, since Muay Thai covers the standup game and Jiu-Jitsu covers the ground. Beginners are welcome, and you never have to spar before you are ready.

Our head coach, Thiago Alves, learned Jiu-Jitsu in Brazil and trained under some of the best instructors in the world before opening his own academy. Classes stay personal, with coaches who know every student by name, and the room is built on respect and teamwork as much as technique.
